"When a New Song Begins" - 09/14/2026

Yesterday, Vincent celebrated Fall Kickoff Sunday, and there was something wonderfully alive in the church. Smiling faces filled the building, children’s giggles floated through the hallways, and conversations seemed to rise from every corner. Our new sermon series, The Story We Sing, began with a song chosen by our church family. There was joy in the room, but also something deeper, a sense that a new season was opening before us. As another ministry year begins, the energy of yesterday lingers like the first notes of a song still waiting to unfold.
Scripture
“Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.”
- Psalm 96:1 (NIV)
Reflection
A new song does not always begin with something completely new.
Sometimes it begins when familiar voices gather again.
The same sanctuary. The same pews. The same faces, along with a few new ones. Children running through familiar hallways. Friends catching up after summer. A melody heard before, yet somehow sounding different because another season of life has passed.
Perhaps this is part of what the psalmist means by a “new song.”
The newness may not be found in replacing what has been, but in discovering that God is still creating within what already exists. Grace gives old words new meaning. Time gives familiar friendships deeper roots. A congregation gathers again, carrying joys and losses, questions and hopes that were not present a year ago.
And so the song changes.
A church is always becoming.
Every conversation adds a note. Every child’s laughter becomes a small rhythm of hope. Every prayer, meal, Bible study, choir rehearsal, quiet act of kindness, and moment of welcome becomes part of a larger melody that no single person can hear completely.
Perhaps God hears the whole song.
At the beginning of another ministry year, there is no need to know every verse that will be sung. Some will be joyful. Some may carry sorrow. Some may emerge quietly from places no one expected.
For now, it may be enough simply to listen.
A new song has begun among us.
And somewhere beneath all our voices is the faithful rhythm of grace, reminding the church that the story being sung has always been larger than any one season.
Prayer
God of new beginnings,
thank you for the laughter, voices, friendships, and hopes that fill your church.
Receive the song of this new season, even before all its words are known.
Teach us to listen for your grace in familiar places and unexpected moments.
May every life among us become a note of kindness, courage, welcome, and love.
And through all the seasons ahead, keep our hearts attentive to the song you are still composing. Amen.
