"The Rain That Remembers Us"- 08/10/2026

While I was in the D.C. area last week, it rained almost every day, sometimes a good downpour overnight, sometimes just a quick shower for half an hour in the middle of the day. Every time, it left everything feeling so fresh and clean. Then I got back home to Minot, and right away several of church friends were telling me how dry things have gotten here, the fields, the yards, everybody's just been waiting for rain. And then this morning, I woke up to the sound of rain drizzling outside my window. It felt so good to know that rain finally made it here too. In Korean, we actually have a word just for this kind of rain, 단비 (dan-bi), "sweet rain." It's the rain that shows up right when you've been waiting for it long enough to really feel it.

단비 (Dan-bi): The Rain That Remembers Us

Scripture
"He will be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth."
— Psalm 72:6 (NIV)

Reflection
There is a particular kind of listening that only dry ground teaches. A field that has known nothing but sun for weeks does not merely receive rain, it remembers rain, the way the body remembers rest after long labor, the way the heart remembers welcome after a season of being unseen. The psalmist did not compare God's coming to a flood or a storm. He chose something quieter: rain falling on a mown field, water finding grass low and vulnerable, soaking in without violence, without spectacle, simply present where it is needed most.

Grace so often works this way, drizzling rather than crashing, arriving on ordinary Monday mornings rather than in thunder. A whole week of showers in one place, a whole season of drought in another, and then, without announcement, the water comes home too. There is no explaining why some fields wait longer than others for their rain, why some hearts carry drought long after neighboring hearts have already been refreshed. But the character of God revealed in this verse is not a God who waters selectively out of favor, but a God whose nature is to come like rain, gently, faithfully, to whatever ground is ready to receive.

단비 (dan-bi, sweet rain) does not fall on ground that has forgotten it was thirsty. It falls on ground that has waited long enough to feel the difference. Perhaps this is why the driest seasons of the soul so often become the ones remembered afterward with the deepest gratitude, not because the waiting was pleasant, but because the rain, when it finally came, meant something it could not have meant otherwise.

This morning's drizzle over dry yards is a small parable repeating itself across every field and every heart that has ever waited on grace. The mown field does not strive for rain. It only lies open, low, and ready. And rain, in its own perfect timing, finds it.

Prayer
Gracious God, thank you for coming like rain, gentle and unhurried, to the dry places we carry. Where fields wait, where hearts wait, where whole seasons feel parched, meet us with the quiet mercy of 단비. Teach us to lie open before you as a mown field lies open to the sky, trusting that your coming, however long delayed, is never withheld. Refresh what has grown weary in us this day. Amen.
