"Held in What We Cannot Fix" - 07/24/2026

Someone I love, a friend in our Vincent family, is in the final stage of cancer. The pain is real and heavy. In the midst of it all, she and her family have asked for space, so there will be no visits, not even from me. I want to honor that request.
But I also know that many of you are carrying people like her in your hearts right now. Some of you are caregivers. Some of you are the ones fighting. This devotional is for all of you: those who are holding on and those who are holding someone else up.

Scripture
"The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
— Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

There is a kind of love that sits quietly outside a closed door.
It does not knock. It does not fix. It does not explain why this is happening or reach for the right words. It simply stays somewhere nearby, holding the person on the other side in a way that needs no permission to begin.

This is where many of us find ourselves. We love someone who is suffering, and we cannot get close enough to help. Or we are the ones suffering, and we have asked the world to keep its distance because we just do not have the strength for company right now.
Both are real. Both are holy.

The Hebrew word for compassion, רַחֲמִים[rachamim], shares its root with the word for womb. It names the kind of tenderness that holds before it understands. Before answers come. Before relief arrives. It is the love God carries toward the broken, not from a careful distance, but from somewhere underneath, the way the ground holds everything that falls on it.

For those who are caregiving: your presence matters even when it is not wanted right now. Your prayer matters even when it is never spoken out loud. The love you carry for someone does not need access to stay real.

For those who are sick and fighting: You do not owe anyone your strength. Asking for space is not pulling away from love. Sometimes it is the only honest thing left to do. And in that space, God has not stepped back. God is already there, living inside the silence with you.

Neither the one who waits outside the door, nor the one who suffers on the other side of it, is forgotten.
There is a tenderness that surrounds what we cannot fix. And it holds.

Prayer
Lord, we do not always know how to love someone through their hardest hours. Teach us to stay near without needing to enter, to pray without needing to be seen, to trust that You are already in the rooms we cannot reach. Hold the ones who are suffering. Hold the ones who love them from a distance. And remind us all that nothing we carry is carried alone. Amen.
