"The Grace to Begin Again" - 09/07/2026

Reflection
There is something gentle about the beginning of fall.
The morning air feels different. The light arrives at a slightly different angle. Familiar rhythms begin returning after the wandering days of summer. At church, classrooms open again, music fills the sanctuary, and people find their way back to places that have been waiting for them.

A new season often carries a quiet invitation to begin again.
And yet, as we begin again, we may notice how much in us remains unfinished.
Perhaps we had hoped to become more patient by now. Perhaps there is a prayer we meant to pray more faithfully, a relationship we wanted to mend, or a burden we thought we would have released. The calendar has moved forward, but some parts of our hearts seem to be standing in the same place.

We may wonder, after all this time, why am I still struggling with this?

Paul’s words offer us gentle companionship: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal.”
Paul does not hide his unfinishedness. He does not seem ashamed of it either. He simply names it and continues forward.
Perhaps he can do this because he knows that the Christian life does not begin with his ability to hold on to Christ. It begins with Christ holding on to him.
“I press on,” Paul writes, “to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
Christ took hold of me.

There may be days when that is all we need to remember.
On days when faith feels strong, Christ holds us. On days when prayer feels empty, Christ holds us. When we are growing, Christ holds us. When we seem to repeat the same mistakes and wonder whether anything within us is truly changing, Christ still holds us.

Imagine a child learning to play a hymn on the piano. The melody comes slowly. There are pauses between the notes. The rhythm is uneven, and sometimes the child must stop and begin again.
The child hears every mistake.
But the teacher may hear something else.
The teacher hears the melody beginning to emerge.

Perhaps Christ listens to our lives with that same patience. We hear the missed notes and the places where we have lost the rhythm. We notice the words we wish we had not spoken and the moments when fear was stronger than love.
Yet Christ may also hear what grace is quietly forming beneath it all.

A little more patience than before. A softening where there was once resentment. A growing willingness to listen. A small act of kindness no one else noticed. A prayer offered even when we were unsure what to say.
These changes may feel too small to call spiritual growth. But perhaps grace often comes to us in small notes before it becomes a melody.

We do not need to force the song. We do not need to pretend that every part of our life is already in harmony. We can remain here, held by Christ, and allow grace to continue its patient work.

The hymn “More Love to Thee, O Christ” does not ask for a life without sorrow, questions, or unfinished places. It simply gives those places a prayer:
“More love to Thee, O Christ,
More love to Thee.”
Not perfect faith.
Not complete understanding.
Not a life without missed notes.
Only a heart that is slowly learning to love.

As this new season begins, you might sit quietly with Paul’s words:
“Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
Say them slowly.
Let them rest within you.
You do not have to reach for Christ from a great distance. You are already being held.
And somewhere within your unfinished life, grace may already be teaching you the next note.
 

Prayer
Gracious Christ, You know the places in me that are still unfinished. You know the promises I have struggled to keep, the habits I have not changed, and the love I have sometimes withheld. Thank You for holding on to me with patience and mercy. Free me from pretending that I have already arrived. Give me grace to begin again today, trusting that You are still at work in me. Teach me to love You more and to let that love become visible in the way I listen, forgive, serve, and care for others. Amen.
