"The Life We Cannot Give" - 10/19/2026

Yesterday, Vincent held our annual Charge Conference. After many meetings, reports, and preparations, I am grateful for the lay leaders who shared the work and helped bring everything together. With next year’s plans approved, I find myself pausing over a simple truth: we have much to do, but the church’s future rests in God’s hands. What a gift it is to take part in the work of grace.

Refection
There is a particular quiet after a season of preparation. The reports are finished. The meeting has ended. For a moment, the mind stops moving ahead to the next task, and gratitude has room to breathe.

So many hands have helped. Someone gathered information after a long day. Someone carefully considered what the coming year might need. Someone offered time that could have been spent elsewhere. These ordinary acts carry love within them, and God receives them.

Paul’s words make room for both faithful work and humble rest. Planting matters. Watering matters. Yet beneath the soil, something happens that the gardener cannot command. A seed opens. Roots reach into the darkness. Life begins its quiet movement toward the light.
The church lives within this same mystery.

A meal can be prepared, a welcome offered, a lesson thoughtfully planned. Through these gifts, people may encounter the love of Christ. Yet the awakening of trust, the healing of a wounded heart, the courage to believe again: these belong to the gracious work of God.
Even before the doors open, grace is already at work in the lives of those who will enter.

This brings a deep and gentle freedom. There is work to do, but no need to carry the weight of making everything grow. There is room to listen, to change direction, and to notice where God is leading.

The plans for another year can rest in open hands. Alongside them rests a prayer: that our shared labor may become a channel through which God’s love reaches our neighbors.
And today, after all the preparation, there is room to be thankful simply for being invited into this holy work.


Prayer
Gracious God, thank you for every person who shares in Vincent’s ministry. Give rest to tired minds and renew the joy of serving together. Keep our plans open to your guidance and our hearts attentive to our neighbors. Let your love flow through our words, our work, and our welcome. Help us serve faithfully and trust you with the growth. Amen.
