"Before the Words Are Ready" - 10/05/2026

Yesterday, in our series The Story We Sing, we reflected on “Rock of Ages” and God’s invitation to bring our whole hearts into his care. Today, I’ve been thinking about what happens before we find the words to pray. Sometimes the most honest thing we bring to God is a sigh.
Scripture
“All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.”
Psalm 38:9, NIV
Reflection
A message can take longer to revise than to write. A sentence is typed, softened, deleted, and tried again. Somewhere between the first draft and the final version, “I’m disappointed” becomes “No problem.” There are good reasons to choose words carefully. Still, something true can disappear along the way.
That habit sometimes follows us into prayer. Anger waits until it sounds more reasonable. Fear waits until it can be accompanied by a statement of faith. A longing feels too small, too selfish, or too difficult to explain, so it remains unspoken.
Psalm 38 comes from a troubled place, where suffering and regret are tangled together. Yet this small verse offers an astonishing intimacy: even the psalmist’s sighing is known to God.
A sigh has no carefully chosen vocabulary. It escapes while the coffee brews, after a difficult phone call, or when the house finally grows quiet. Sometimes it carries something we have not yet admitted to ourselves.
God receives us there, before an explanation is ready.
Being known this way may feel uncomfortable at first. The hurt beneath the irritation becomes visible. So does the envy beneath the complaint, or the weariness beneath the cheerful answer. There is mercy in having somewhere to begin with what is actually there.
Honest prayer may eventually lead to an apology, a difficult conversation, or a request for help. But it can begin much earlier, with a breath and a little willingness to stay.
This morning, a sigh can be allowed to finish without being hurried away. Whatever rises with it can remain before God for a moment. The words may come slowly. God is already listening.
Prayer
God who hears even our sighing, help us stay with the truth of our hearts. Receive the feelings we struggle to name and the longings we hesitate to admit. Let your mercy give us courage to pray honestly and to take the next faithful step. Amen.
