"The Grace Over the Sudden Shower" - 06/22/2026

It really has been a unique June for us here in Minot, hasn't it? After surviving that seemingly endless winter and the lingering chill of spring, we were all so ready to fully embrace the summer sun. Instead, we have been greeted by near-daily rains, sudden winds, and temperatures that seem to shift on a dime. It feels a bit strange, perhaps even unsettling as we ponder the larger realities of our changing climate and the things we simply cannot predict or manage. Yet, looking outside, there is something so undeniably beautiful about how fast and fresh the green grass is growing because of these overnight showers. Let's step into a quiet space together today, leaning into this unpredictable season to see how God meets us in the unexpected rhythms of the earth.
Scripture
"Sing to the Lord with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp. He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills."
- Psalm 147:7–8 (NIV)
Reflection
The earth operates under a wisdom that often bypasses human expectations. In the northern plains, summer is anticipated as a season of uninterrupted light and steady warmth, a well-earned reward after months of frost. When the skies offer wind and daily rain instead, a quiet friction arises within the human spirit. The inability to predict or manage the atmosphere exposes the limits of human control.
Yet, beneath the grey canopy, a silent transformation occurs. The soil drinks deeply from the overnight downpours. The fields and lawns expand with a vibrant greenness, a profound manifestation of life that the Korean language beautifully calls 푸름 (pureum, vibrant greenness). This abundance does not wait for a perfect sky. It thrives precisely within the unsettling, rapid shifts of temperature and moisture.
Divine grace frequently mirrors this unpredictable weather. Spiritual seasons rarely align with human schedules or desires for constant sunshine. Often, the soul finds itself in a season of sudden, spiritual downpours that disrupt plans and alter the emotional landscape. These moments can feel strange and unmanageable.
However, the Sacred Presence is deeply at work within the dampness and the wind. The clouds that obscure the sun are the very entities supplying the moisture needed for deep root systems to anchor. Peace is found not by managing the sky, but by trusting the Source of the rain. In the quiet unfolding of an unpredictable June, there is an invitation to release the need for certainty. Creation reminds us that growth occurs in the wild, unmapped spaces of existence, nurtured by a love that falls gently upon the earth, transforming the landscape into a sanctuary of quiet renewal.
Prayer
Creator of the wind and the rain, teach us to rest in the rhythms we cannot control. When the seasons of our lives feel unpredictable, and the skies darken, open our eyes to the quiet growth happening beneath the surface. May we trust your steady love amidst the shifting currents of our world. Amen.
