"Mercy Already Waiting" - 10/26/2026

Yesterday in worship, our music director, Kimmy shared how the hymn “What Wondrous Love Is This” carries the sound of her great-grandmother’s humming, and how grace feels astonishing because it is never earned. That stayed with me. Love can be so faithful that we stop noticing it, like the coffee that is made every morning until the morning it is not.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Morning arrives without asking for notice. Light moves across the kitchen floor, the bird begins its light songs, and the day opens as it has opened a thousand times before. So much of grace comes in this quiet way, dressed in the ordinary, easy to receive and just as easy to overlook.

The poet of Lamentations wrote these words from a place of ruin. Jerusalem lay broken, and still the poet turned toward the dawn and named what remained: God’s great love. The Hebrew word חֶסֶד (chesed, steadfast love) speaks of a faithfulness that does not tire and does not leave when the season turns hard. Beside it stands רַחֲמִים (rachamim, compassions), a word rooted in the tenderness of a mother’s womb, a mercy that begins before any effort is made to earn it.

Love of this kind can become so constant that it fades into the background, like a song heard since childhood. The melody is known by heart, yet the words pass without being heard. Then one morning a verse is sung slowly, and its meaning arrives again with fresh weight.

New every morning does not mean that mercy was absent yesterday. It means that no dawn begins at zero. Each day rises on forgiveness already given, and the heart is invited to pause, breathe, and simply receive.


Prayer
Faithful God, thank you for mercy that rises with the morning light. Open our eyes to the love that has carried us quietly and long. Where gratitude has grown faint, wake it gently. Where regret lingers, speak your forgiveness again. Teach us to receive, and to give as we have been given. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
