"The Presence We Carry" - 09/21/2026

This fall at Vincent, our sermon series, The Story We Sing, has been listening to the stories carried within favorite hymns. This past Sunday, “In the Garden” brought us into one of those tender places where music, memory, grief, and faith meet. One of our church friends shared how the hymn became especially meaningful after the sudden death of her mother. Her mother had been a farm girl who always kept a garden. Looking back on that painful season, she offered a simple sentence that stayed with me: “I leaned hard on God.” Sometimes a few words hold an entire story. Her experience reminds us that faith does not always explain what has happened. Sometimes faith simply gives us Someone strong enough to lean upon.

“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” - Exodus 33:14, NIV

Reflection
Gardens hold many things at once.
There can be blossoms beside weeds, new growth beside fading leaves, beauty beside the quiet signs that another season is ending. Human life often grows in much the same way. Joy and sorrow can share the same ground.

Moses knew something about uncertain ground. The road ahead was unknown, and the people entrusted to him were weary and complicated. What he needed most was not a detailed map. He needed the assurance that God would go with them.
“My Presence will go with you.”
Perhaps this is one of the gentlest promises in Scripture.
God does not promise Moses an easy road. God promises presence.

That same mystery lives within the garden where Mary Magdalene wept. Grief had changed the world she knew. Then Christ spoke her name. Before Mary understood everything, she discovered that she was still known.

There are seasons when explanations cannot carry the weight of the heart. Loss remains loss. An empty chair remains empty. A painful memory does not suddenly become painless.
Yet the presence of God can hold what explanations cannot.

Sometimes faith looks less like standing strong and more like leaning hard. It is resting the full weight of sorrow upon a Love that does not move away.
And eventually, like Mary leaving the garden and Moses entering the wilderness, life continues.

The garden cannot always be kept.
But its promise can be carried.

The God who meets us in sacred moments also walks into kitchens and hospital rooms, quiet houses and crowded workplaces, uncertain mornings and long nights.
The garden may be behind us.
The Presence goes with us.

Prayer
Gracious God,
when the road is unfamiliar and the heart is carrying more than words can hold, let your presence become our resting place. Meet us in memories both beautiful and painful. Remind us that every name is known to you and every sorrow is held with tenderness. When it is time to leave the garden and walk again into ordinary life, go with us. Help us lean upon your love and become gentle signs of that love for others.
